The Sofia Boys Choir has repeatedly given concerts in Russia, Greece, Poland, Italy, Germany, France, Spain, Switzerland, Slovenia, Slovakia, Hungary, Moldova, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Belgium and Japan.

Interaction with Other Cultural Institutions

Sofia Boys Choir has performed together with the Kaval Men's Chorale, Vassil Arnaoudov Sofia Chamber Choir, Sofia Ladies Chamber Orchestra, Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra, Choir and Orchestra of the National Opera and Ballet, Orchestra and Mixed Choir of the Bulgarian National Radio, the Svetoslav Obretenov National Philharmonic Choir, New Symphony Orchestra, Classic FM Orchestra, Ars Musica Chamber Ensemble and others.

The ensemble has been engaged in recordings and concerts under the baton of Rossitsa Batalova, Ivan Marinov, Emil Tabakov, Alipi Naydenov, Nayden Todorov, Boris Spassov, Yordan Dafov, Rossen Milanov, Igor Bogdanov and Luciano di Martino.

The Sofia Boys Choir regularly participates in productions of the 'Stefan Makedonski' National Music Theatre (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar), 'Nikolai Binev' Youth Theatre (Oliver) National Opera and Ballet (Tosca and others).

 

Awards from International Choir Competitions

Sofia Boys Choir has been awarded a Grand Prix, First Prize and Second Prize at the Guido d'Arezzo International Choir Competition in the town of Arezzo, Italy (1993); First Prize at the International May Choir Competition 'Prof. Georgi Dimitrov' in Varna (1997); First Prize at the Giuseppe Zelioli International Choral Competition of Sacred Music in Lecco, Italy (1997); First Prize at the International Choral Competition in Neuchâtel, Switzerland (1999); Second Prize at the First International Folk Choir Competition for Male Choirs in Bolzano, Italy (2000), where Adriana Blagoeva was also bestowed a Special Prize for Conductors; two Second Prizes in the Orlando di Lasso International Choir Competition in Camerino, Italy (2003); First and Second Prize at the International Choral Competition 'Moscow Sounds' in Moscow, Russia (2012).

Repertoire

The repertoire range of the choir is varied and interesting.Bulgarian music has a standing representation.

Many composers have written songs specifically for the Sofia Boys - Todor Popov, Alexander Tanev, Alexander Tekeliev, Philip Pavlov, Petar Lyondev, Benzion Eliezer, Plamen Arabov, Stoyan Babekov, Peter Krumov and others.

A significant part of the repertoire is comprised of arrangements of Bulgarian folk and Orthodox music.

Works by foreign composers performed by the range in musical style from the 14th century to the present day. Some of the choral-orchestral works by Giovanni Pergolesi, Šimon Brixi Charles Gounod, Gabriel Fauré, Michael Haydn and Benjamin Britten occupy a special place in the repertoire.

The choir's operatic concerts are also popular. Music by Purcell, Handel, Mozart, Weber, Wagner, Verdi, Gounod, Mascagni, Donizetti, Rossini, Borodin, Dargomyzhsky, Rachmaninoff, Gershwin, Bernstein, as well as by Bulgarian composers is performed.
