First Prize for the Sofia Boys’ Choir at a Prestigious International Choir Festival in Poland

The Sofia Boys’ Choir at the “Tsar Boris III – 1928” Community Centre, conducted by Prof. Dr. Adriana Blagoeva, won First Prize in the category “Children’s and Youth Choirs” at the 38th International Choir Competition of Church Slavonic Music “Hajnówka,” Poland, 2019.

The festival took place from May 15 to 19 in Białystok under the honorary patronage of the President of Poland, Andrzej Duda. The festival concerts were covered by Polish National Television and Polish National Radio.

A total of 27 choirs from Bulgaria, Moldova, Georgia, Russia, Slovakia, Belarus, Ukraine, Latvia, Serbia, Poland, Estonia, and Ghana competed in the five categories of the contest. Bulgarian choral art was represented by the Sofia Boys’ Choir. Their competition program included works by Dobri Hristov, Stoyan Babekov, Alexander Arkhangelsky, Stepan Degtyaryov, Sergey Trubachov, Alexey Turenkov, Vasily Titov, among others. Within the framework of the festival, the choir also gave two additional concerts in Białystok and nearby towns.

On May 20, at St. Anne’s Cathedral in Budapest, the Sofia Boys’ Choir, conducted by Prof. Dr. Adriana Blagoeva, performed a special concert dedicated to May 24 – the Day of Bulgarian Education and Culture. The event was organized by the Bulgarian Cultural Institute in Budapest. The soloist was bass-baritone Alexander Mitev, choirmaster of the Sofia Boys’ Choir. The concert was recorded by Hungarian National Television.
