On 26 June, at 6:00 p.m., the Sofia Boys’ Choir, affiliated with the Community Cultural Centre “Tsar Boris III – 1928” and conducted by Alexander Mitev, will take part in the premiere of the opera Tannhäuser by Richard Wagner at the Sofia Opera and Ballet.
Richard Wagner conceived the idea of composing an opera based on the legend of Tannhäuser as early as 1841. The dramatic core of the work draws upon the medieval legend of Tannhäuser and the historical Singers’ Contest at Wartburg Castle near Eisenach. Wagner further enriched the libretto by drawing on contemporary literary sources, including works by E. T. A. Hoffmann and Ludwig Tieck, thereby deepening the opera’s philosophical and poetic dimensions.
This production marks the fourth staging of Tannhäuser at the Sofia Opera and Ballet, following a 42-year absence from the theatre’s repertoire. The production is conducted by Konstantin Trinks and directed by Plamen Kartaloff.
