On 5 July, at 4:00 p.m., the Sofia Boys’ Choir, affiliated with the Chitalishte Tsar Boris III – 1928 and conducted by Alexander Mitev, will take part in the premiere of the opera Tannhäuser by Richard Wagner at the Sofia Opera and Ballet.
Richard Wagner conceived the idea of composing an opera based on the legend of Tannhäuser as early as 1841. The dramatic foundation of the work draws on the medieval legend of Tannhäuser and the historical Singers’ Contest at Wartburg Castle near Eisenach. Wagner further enriched the opera by drawing on contemporary literary sources, including works by E. T. A. Hoffmann and Ludwig Tieck, thereby deepening its philosophical and poetic dimensions.
This production marks the fourth staging of Tannhäuser at the Sofia Opera and Ballet, following a 42-year absence from its repertoire. The performance is conducted by Konstantin Trinks and directed by Plamen Kartaloff.
